I agree with OP, the trend is obvious, even though there are exceptions, and yes it happens in other games. However you boil it down people just want balance and with gods like Bellona being released you have to ask two questions:

    1. Did anybody play her/test her vs other gods? She can 1v1 %90 of the gods in the game.

    2. If so, why was she released in her current state?

As far as "New gods being OP things so that you can cash grab" I really find this argument hard to believe considering that you get 200 gems every month just by logging in and new gods cost exactly that much. I've never spent money on Smite(I wish I could but) yet I've been able to buy almost every new god at release with gems. I seriously don't think that any significant amount of profit can be gained this way with the amount of free gems that is being thrown at us.
If a god is good, fun to play, and maybe OP don't you think that would eat more gems/cause people to spend more cash, than say... a god that sucks and isn't fun? That's just common sense. I always thought it was strange how a free to play game is giving away sooo much of the cash currency (gems) all the time, it's a broken model.

Seriously, does anyone actually think Hou Yi was OP on release (or ever)? Nox? Awilix?

Have Hou Yi and Awilix actaully been changed? I can't remember. Nox was UP at release, but then they buffed her up soo much.

Both Hou Yi and Awilix have been buffed since release.

What were the buffs? And how major/minor were they?

    Awilix:
    - Moonlight Charge knocks up gods from the side as well as from behind and travels 50% faster. This makes her knockup and thus ultimate WAY more reliable

    Hou Yi
    - Base attack speed and per level scaling both increased. Very important as he had the lowest base attack speed of any Hunter
    - Ricochet travels faster. Good buff, makes it easier to land.
    - Divebomb travels faster and Hou Yi is no longer rooted at the end. Makes the ability much more viable as an escape.

Remember the awilix change. Minor, but it does help. Hou Yi also got a little nerfed on his escape tho, cause now you take dmg in the air I believe.

You do take damage in the air but you're still untargetable, so it only really matters for things like Nu Wa's ult and bleed effects.
