the game was balanced around the idea that you'd have 5 inventory slots, with one used up by boots, with the option of not using any boots to recover the "coveted" 6th slot.
The claim is that boots are mandatory currently, therefore you have no choice, yet boosting everyone's moves speed or creating a "special slot" for boots is actually what would make them mandatory.
Currently. Its an option, not mandatory. They are good cheap items, but it is possible to phase them out late game under some situations and its possible to build them at different times for different builds with different objectives.
Making speed mandatory on all characters (built-in) removes the option of deciding to delay boots.
Adding a "special slot" for boots removes the option of not using boots.
Both options remove the decision to phase out boots late game.
Boots are fine as-is, but if anything was going to happen to them that would be an improvement to the game, then more boots need to be added.

Every god has a Hidden Ability that unlocks when you buy boots.
"Kick" deals 185/355/525/695/865 + 170% Scaling (universal). This ability can Crit. Mages and Guardians by default have 60% Crit Chance and 240% Crit Damage.
Augmented by which class type you are-
Guardians: +75% Damage dealt.
Assassins: +50% Damage dealt.
Mages: +90% Damage dealt. (this ability deals 10751 damage on Scylla)
Hunters: +40% Damage dealt.
Warriors: +60% Damage dealt.
This ability also costs 1 Mana, has a CD of 1.5 seconds, has a range of 55, and has a Cleave. It also stuns for 2/3/4/5/6 seconds.

The key combination to use this ability is: S-C-Y-L-L-A.
This ability has gotten me a Decakill.
Unfortunately...in Patch 5.01 this ability will be lost forever as Hirez are removing Boots.
This does come with a global 18% movespeed buff to all gods tho.

Serioustalk - Boots aren't really that OP but movespeed is, making Boots almost mandatory.
Boots being locked in makes all gods only have 5 versatile item slots, reducing build diversity. Which is why Boots should go in the trashcan and just buff all gods Movespeed by 18%.
For Ratatoskr buff his movespeed by 20% and his Passive gives him 5 power for every 160 gold he earns (not including starter gold), capping at 50 power.
